During this tutorial, you will produce a traditionally handcrafted leather keyring from full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide leather.
This keyring-making tutorial is a good starting point for the novice craftsperson who wishes to try leathercraft without the upfront investment in tools, equipment and materials. The use of all tools and materials during the session is included and you will finish the tutorial with a durable, high-quality keyring that you can keep and use!
The classically-styled leather keyring has been carefully designed by Fenner to incorporate a selection of practical leathercraft skills including; marking leather, punching holes in leather, using die press punches, setting a rivet, edge burnishing, and hand sewing leather (traditional saddle stitch). During the session, Fenner will also explain the design process and methodologies used to arrive at the final keyring design.
Aimed at the novice leathercrafter, the session assumes no previous knolwedge or experience of working with leather. Fenner will provide full step-by-step guidance and instruction during the tutorial and will introduce a selection of practical leathercrafting skills required to craft the project. This particular session focuses on producing a specific product, and so I would recommend the Introduction to Leatherwork tutorial for those seeking a broader overview of practical leathercraft skills.
Students will receive a handout summarising key points from the session as well as a list of the tools and equipment used during the tutorial.
