Do I need any previous leatherworking experience?
Not at all - I offer tutorial sessions and workshops for beginners. The popular Introduction to Leatherwork one-to-one / one-to-two tutorial has been carefully designed to provide a relaxed introduction to the craft with a focus on learning about the tools and transferable practical leathercrafting skills rather than making a finished product during this session.
Many of my workshops are also aimed at the novice craftsperson, with step-by-step guidance and assistance provided during the session. I do also run workshops aimed at the more experienced craftsperson - please look at the scheduled leathercraft workshops page and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about the session that would be best for your experience level.
Where are the tutorials / workshops held?
I use a few local studio and community spaces in Norwich, Norfolk for my tutorial sessions and workshops including a glass studio in Reepham and some community spaces in the NR10 / NR12 areas. For tutorials, venues are usually selected based on availability but if you have any preferences for the location please let me know when sending a booking enquiry. The location of workshops will be detailed in the listing for the specific workshop event.
Do you offer gift vouchers?
Yes. Gift vouchers for tutorials and workshops are available upon request and make an excellent present!
Are all materials provided?
Yes. All materials are provided along with the use of tools/equipment during the session (unless otherwise stated within the details for the specific tutorial or workshop).
Do I need to bring anything to the tutorial / workshop?
I would recommend that you always bring a drink and you may also want snacks, especially for longer sessions. Please also be sure to bring any prescription eyeglasses that you would normally wear for close work.
What should I wear to a tutorial / workshop?
Comfortable clothing that is suitable for crafting. If the session is going to include the use of any adhesives, dyes or finishes then aprons will be available to help protect your clothing. While I take care to keep the workspace tidy, some materials can occasionally mark fabrics, so it's best to avoid wearing your favourite outfit!
Can I take photos during the session?
Absolutely! Please share the best ones with me and be sure to tag my business profile page(s) in any that you upload to social media.
How long do tutorials / workshops last?
Tutorial and workshop lengths vary and the typical timings can be found on the tutorial information pages or workshop listings.
Can I bring someone with me to a one-to-one tutorial?
Sure! You're very welcome to bring a partner, friend, or another adult family member along to sit in during your one-to-one tutorial. Any guest is welcome to observe but won't be able to take part in the one-to-one lesson or receive individual instruction. Some people like to have someone with them and I'm more than happy to accommodate that.
Do you teach hand stitching?
Yes. Hand sewing using the saddle stitch method is a core skill required for many leathercraft projects and is covered to an introductory level in the popular Introduction to Leatherwork tutorial. I also offer a more in-depth session called 'Hand Sewing Leather: The Saddle Stitch' which focuses on expanding your hand sewing skills and refining the saddle stitch technique.
Can children attend a leatherwork tutorial or workshop?
Encouraging any young person's interest in developing practical skills is important however leatherworking does involve the use of sharp cutting tools and so it isn't suitable for young children. For teenagers with a genuine interest in leathercraft, I would recommend a tutorial, as it offers opportunity for more guidance and closer supervision.
Those under 18 are welcome to attend a tutorial by prior arrangement and must be accompanied by a paying adult who remains present for the entire session. If you'd like to arrange a tutorial for a young person, please get in touch.
Can I take my practice pieces / finished item home?
Of course you can! In the case of the Introduction to Leathercraft tutorial you will leave the session with some small trial pieces of some of the techniques that you will have practised on scrap leather during the session. For tutorials / workshops that include the production of a finished piece this will be yours to keep.

Yes. Private workshops are available for small groups - please get in touch via the contact page to discuss your specific requirements.
